Occupational Therapy Assistant

OTA (Occupational Therapy Assistant)

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that helps people take part in the daily activities that are important to their lives. These activities, called occupations, include tasks such as getting dressed, preparing meals, attending school, working, playing, and caring for family members.

When an injury, illness, disability, or developmental condition makes these activities difficult, occupational therapy helps people build skills, regain abilities, adapt their environment, or learn new ways to do the things that matter to them. The goal is to help people participate as fully and independently as possible in their daily lives.

What Does an Occupational Therapy Assistant Do?

An occupational therapy assistant (OTA) works directly with clients to help them achieve their goals. Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, they implement treatment plans, guide clients through therapeutic activities, teach strategies for daily living, and help people use adaptive equipment when needed.

For example, an OTA might help someone recovering from a stroke learn to dress independently, help a child develop the skills needed to participate in the classroom, or help an older adult safely manage daily activities at home.

OTAs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, schools, outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, and home health.

Why Choose a Career in Occupational Therapy?

If you enjoy working with people, solving problems, being creative, and helping others overcome challenges, occupational therapy may be a great fit for you. As an OTA, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone's life, not just by helping them recover a skill, but by helping them return to the activities, roles, and routines that make life meaningful.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) curriculum at 做厙勛圖 College includes both classroom education and fieldwork (clinical) training in occupational therapy settings. OTA courses are offered in a hybrid format with a portion of the course completed via distance education. Upon successful completion of academic and fieldwork education, students are awarded an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. Program graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam provided by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) to become a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA). State licensure requirements will vary between states.

Program Approval and Accreditation

The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. Notice to Students Regarding Licensing

Texas House Bill (HB) 1508

Effective September 1st 2017, House Bill (HB) 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify you a potential or enrolled student that a criminal history may make you ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion.

The website provides links to information about the licensing process and requirements.

Should you wish to request a review of the impact of criminal history on your potential OTA License prior to or during your quest for a degree, you can visit website and request a Criminal History Evaluation.

This information is being provided to all persons who apply or enroll in the program with notice of the requirements as described above, regardless of whether or not the person has been convicted of a criminal offense.

Additionally, HB 1508 authorizes licensing agencies to require reimbursements when a student fails to receive the required notice.
